Constructed Panoramas

Constructed Panoramas continues a decades-long exploration of layering space, time, and meaning within the photographic medium. Having experimented with physically manipulated prints that expanded photography’s narrative potential, my approach has evolved into a more purist practice. Using digital stitching techniques, I extend panoramic compositions into unconventional, shaped frames and unlike earlier physical assemblages, these digitally constructed panoramas remain within the boundaries of photography, reshaping how spaces are perceived.

Most landscape and architectural photographers use digital software to construct panoramas. Stitching techniques are also indespensible to imaging scientists at space agencies for mapping planetary objects and sections of the universe. What I like about the space images is that they are not cropped to show only the imaged portions of the composition. They reveal the 'negative space' as jagged blackness that surrounds the image. This, I feel is an important aspect of the whole allowing for speculation and meditation about what lays beyond the visible.

Like the terrestrial photographers that must satisfy marketing requirements of theiir clients, I still craft seamless images without the negative space for my commercial clients. However, I prefer to leave that negative space incorporated in my Constructed Panoramas. Part of their strength is their resultant shapes it also filters over into all my in-camera panoramas whole.
